Corn Maze – Pt. 1
“How in the world do you make the corn maze?”
One of the questions we get asked the most is how does the maze get cut? “Ancient Chinese Secret” is what want to answer to keep the mystery alive, but in reality it’s a simple concept, and one that most of us have used at one time or another.
Picture this: you’re headed out on vacation 2 states away. You’ve done your research, found the best places to eat, play and sleep, but now you are actually driving that way and realize you need to ask Siri to get you to the actual resort. Siri proceeds to prompt Maps to open and before you know it you can see exactly where your car is on the map and where every street and intersection is, in real time! GPS, just as it tells you where you need to go, it also is what tells the tractor where it needs to go. The main difference is that the map you follow has the roads and intersections already there, where we have to superimpose the maze design in the geographical area that we are driving in, in order to ‘see the street’ we need to follow. Since the tractor is tilling as it goes, the maze paths are what is left behind.
I say ‘we’ but that’s only a figure of speech as the company, or ‘experts’, that design and cut our maze are actually rooted in Idaho and travel the countryside all spring and summer long cutting mazes just like ours. They are the brains and technology behind the creation, all we have to do is provide a concept, tell them when the corn is peaking out of the ground, and keep the weeds at bay the rest of the summer! After year 1 of our corn maze adventure we decided that maze cutting should be left to the pros, and Maze Play are most definitely the Pros!
We have been working with the Maze Play team for almost 4 years now, and each year the process starts almost as soon as the previous years corn is harvested, however a more focused effort starts with the concept & design just after the start of the new year. This for us is often the most challenging part because deciding what to design around, and even more importantly what is going to keep the interest of our customers for an entire season, can be kind of stressful. One thing is for sure… not only will our maze entertain, but it will also educate! We decided this early on when we made one of our main goals as a farm would be to ensure that our guests leave knowing a little more about something than they did before they arrived.
Have you been to the CPP Corn Maze in the past 5 years? What did you leave knowing more about then when you came? If anything, now you know more about how it’s created, and if you follow us in this corn maze series you’ll learn about some of our past maze designs and why we chose them! Follow along!
